asmith@medicinehatnews.com As a collaboration between the Medicine Hat Public Library, MH Interpretive Program, Niitsitapi Kookums Society and White Horse Rider Co, Police Point Park will be hosting an opportunity for a meaningful cultural experience with Elder Charlie Fox. The event, called “Kom Mo Taan: To Recover from Trauma and all it’s Challenges,” will take place Friday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. In the morning, participants to this free, open event will have the opportunity to learn how to approach an Indigenous Elder, as well as the significance of Blackfoot face painting. “In Blackfoot culture, face painting is sort of like prayer, and so really it’s just a call out to the community if they feel like they’re going through a rough time, or if they want to, you know, come be present with us for the day,” said organizer Davie James. Brenda Mercer of White Horse Rider Co. and fellow organizer explained that they will be showing those present how to make tobacco ties, which are part of the correct protocol when reaching out to an elder for prayers or advice. “In the afternoon, we’re going to be talking about land acknowledgements. So we hope that people bring their chairs or lawn chairs,” said Mercer. “We’re going to be sitting beside the river, and elder Charlie will just be going over what land acknowledgements mean to him coming from Blackfoot Confederacy.” Those interested in participating are encouraged to bring a lawn chair, their own lunch, and a water bottle as they learn more about Blackfoot culture and take this opportunity to heal from any trauma and hardship they may be carrying with them, said Mercer. 8
