@MedicineHatNews A bad day golfing still made for a successful fundraiser for cancer care and research in southern Alberta. The second annual “Golf to Own Cancer” event raised $53,000 despite an inch of rain throughout the day on Sept. 12 at Desert Blume Golf Course. That cancelled rounds for 90 donors who paid $250 each to take part, though organizer Jeff Weder reports almost all took part in the lunch and prime rib diner at the clubhouse as well as charity auction. It brought in $1,000 more than last year, when the group set sights on supporting the provincial campaign to raise $250 million to support the commissioning of the Arthur Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre near the Foothills Hospital in Calgary. “It’s going to be life changing for so many people in the area who are dealing with cancer diagnosis,” said Weder, who adds that like many Hatters, he himself was treated at Tom Baker Cancer Centre. The provincial fundraising effort, known as “Own Cancer” has now raised 90 per cent of its goal, including a $50-million donation from its namesake donor, Arthur J.E. Child. The Medicine Hat event was organized by Weder, Randy Stober, Trevor Ellerman and Mike Keck. Auctioneer services were provided by Darren Lutz. 10
