Alberta Health Services offers tips to avoid painful knee injuries

By Medicine Hat News on September 21, 2024.

As part of its ongoing newsletter, Alberta Health Services has provided a series of tips to avoid knee injuries.

These injuries can occur from everyday wear and tear, said AHS, like from jobs, sports, having a disease such as osteoporosis or arthritis, or simply aging. However, there are just as many ways to help avoid having knee problems.

Avoiding prolonged kneeling, wearing pads on hard surfaces, wearing shoes with arch support and avoiding deep knee bends can all help prevent issues in day-to-day life. While exercising, doing a warmup before doing physical activities and stretching both before starting and after ending activity can improve range of motion and reduce stiffness.

Running downhill should be avoided, said AHS, unless fully conditioned.

Building strength in leg muscles can also help prevent knee injury, and AHS encourages residents to try simple exercises, focusing on front and back thigh muscles.

To find a list of recommended actives and exercises used to strengthen leg muscles and improve agility you can visit Alberta Health Services website. There you can find a step-by-step guide of jumping, hopping and landing activities used to improve leg strength.
