asmith@medicinehatnews.com The date for the fifth annual Ski Swap as hosted by the Canadian Ski Patrol has been announced for Oct. 5. The ski swap offers the opportunity for ski and skateboarding enthusiasts to turn their gently used equipment into cash and get some bargains on new and used equipment. Equipment can be given to the Ski Patrol, which will sell it for them for a commission following an inspection to ensure all pieces being sold are still safe for use. “The ski swap is a great way for skiers and snowboarders to ‘recycle’ equipment they may have outgrown,” said co-ordinator John Haley. New equipment donated from various sponsors will also be available for purchase alongside the donated gear. There will be a wide selection of skis, boots, poles for downhill and cross-country skis, as well as snowboards and other skiing supplies and equipment, said Haley. Participants can register their gear from 5-9 p.m. on Oct 4 at the South Ridge YMCA, with the sale and swap itself taking place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. the following day. Proceeds from the swap will stay in the community and go toward the purchase of first-aid and rescue equipment, as well as the safety and education programs for the Canadian Ski Patrol Palliser Zone, said Haley. The Canadian Ski Patrol a nationally registered charity, comprised of highly-trained volunteers, dedicated to promoting ski safety and providing first-aid and rescue services to skiers. 9
