Power was cut to about 3,100 addresses in Crestwood and parts of South Ridge on Friday morning for about an hour as crews needed to replace a power pole. A city release states the situation was “weather related” but did not expand. Power was restored at about 10:15 a.m.

Rain downgrades fire risk

Cypress County reduced a fire ban to a fire advisory on Friday after precipitation this week, joining the County of Forty Mile which also lessened restrictions this week.

Environment Canada reports that rain in the region Thursday dropped 29 millimetres (1.2 inches) in Medicine Hat, 20 mm in Bow Island and 21 mm in Maple Creek.

A ban on open fires at Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park has also been removed, according to Alberta Parks.

Power line work

Motorists should expect delays for the coming week as crews string power lines near the intersection of Highway 3 and Township Road 120, southwest of Medicine Hat.

Cypress County states that the work was set to begin Friday and should be completed by Sept. 20, depending on weather.

Food waste open house

City officials and consultants will be on hand Tuesday at an open house to discuss food waste collection in Medicine Hat. The solid waste department launched a pilot project this year at select homes to divert organic material into yard waste carts that are delivered for composting at the city landfill. An update will be provided and participants are encouraged to provide feedback. The event takes place from 4-7 p.m. on the main floor of the Esplanade Arts and Heritage Centre.
