The former home of pound services in the city could be up for sale soon.
In 2016 the city acquired a former veterinary clinic on South Railway Street to house then-new contract provider APARC for $394,000 in a foreclosure sale.
Since then, however, the need for ventilation work and other upgrades led to the opening of a new facility near Gershaw Drive.
That has left the former building, located on two lots at 990 and 1002 South Railway Street, as surplus to the city’s needs, director of land and environment Kevin Reddon told a council committee last week.
His office plans to offer the property for sale, pending council’s approval, at a listing price of $399,000.
Sales packages would include estimates on ventilation upgrades and an environmental site assessment.
That risk is general to land that sits adjacent to the rail yard, and would only become an issue in a redevelopment proposal, said Reddon.
One lot houses the building and the other is a parking lot that provides street access, and therefore, they are being offered as a package.
Road closure
Council will consider closing a little-used cul-de-sac road allowance that sits in the middle of a plan to expand a rest home in the city’s far Southwest.
The Haven of Rest plans to replace aging buildings at its facility near Bell Street, across Gershaw Drive from the Medicine Hat Regional Airport.
It negotiated with the city to purchase the land that makes up the road and allowance for use in construction and reconfigure access to the larger site.
City land officials stated no concerns with the change, and have determined the value of the land at $32,400.
If approved, changes to utility right of ways in the vicinity would be drawn up.
