MH Interpretive Centre’s upcoming display honours local creatures with a tough reputation

The Medicine Hat Interpretive Centre is looking to shine a light on the charm of less traditionally charismatic members of the natural world, with its Creepy Critters & Plucky Plants Display.

“Not everyone feels warmly toward animals that might be seen as creepy or unusual,” says park interpreter Rhys Mah Poy. “My goal is to help people appreciate what makes these creatures and plants truly unique, along with their important roles in our ecosystems. Alberta has so many amazing hidden gems, particularly in southeastern Alberta.”

The display features lesser-appreciated species that make this corner of the province fascinating, such as the northern scorpion, tiger salamander, feather-winged beetles, jack-o-lantern mushrooms, pitcher plants, horsetails and more.

Mah Poy promises a fun and unique experience, complete with activities and exciting surprises waiting to be discovered.

The display will be available at the Nature Centre for viewing from Sept. 16 to Nov. 10.

“Come on down to the Nature Centre to check out our latest display,” said Mah Poy. “Discover some animals, fungi and plants that some may find ‘creepy’ or ‘odd,’ and uncover what makes them so fascinating.”

Visitors will learn about the defence mechanisms of the Turkey Vulture, why Northern Scorpions glow under UV light and the carnivorous plants that call Alberta home.

“We’re really excited to share all the amazing stories about these critters, fungi and plucky plants with you,” said Mah Poy.
