A familiar face on the bench at the Medicine Hat courthouse has been named the new assistant chief justice of the provincial Court of Justice, the Justice Ministry announced Wednesday.

Justice Eric Brooks leads Medicine Hat Drug Treatment Court and often hears docket court in Medicine Hat, Lethbridge and regional centres in the Southern Alberta Judicial region.

This week he was named as assistant chief justice for the southern region, while Calgary-based Justice Eric Tolppanen also assumes the new, similar role.

Three other appointments will see lawyers James Sawa, Susan Borsic and Gina Toni become court justices based in Calgary.

“Adding these new roles to the Alberta Court of Justice will increase access to justice for Albertans dealing with civil, criminal and family matters,” according to a ministry release.

Brooks, a former Crown prosecutor, was named a Provincial Court judge in 2011.
