asmith@medicinehatnews.com After consideration of the future of its offerings in Medicine Hat, the Salvation Army has made the decision to continue to provide their evening meal program. In partnership with Fifth Avenue Memorial United Church, they will work together to see that the program continues for the foreseeable future. This partnership has been in place for most of the past decade and has been a critical component for community food security. “We are excited to continue the tradition of service to the community that has been so much a part of Salvation Army service here in the downtown for years,” said Maj. Patsy Rowe, community services officer for the Salvation Army Medicine Hat. “Food security is such a critical issue in our community, and we are pleased to work with community partners such as Fifth Avenue Memorial to address this need.” Recent positive changes to the safety and security environment implemented for the program have worked to make this option possible, the Salvation Army says, allowing for a safe and welcoming environment for those in need of this service and for those in the surrounding area. While the evening meal program will continue, and by-appointment meetings with individuals seeking support will still be available, the drop-in portion of the program, an expanded service added during COVID, will not become available again. 7
