Pilot road rehabilitation project begins next week in NE Crescent Heights

By MEDICINE HAT NEWS on August 15, 2024.

The City of Medicine Hat will be conducting a road rehabilitation project in the neighbourhood of NE Crescent Heights beginning Aug. 20.

The pilot project will utilize a method of pavement preservation called micro-surfacing, which the city says is designed to seal, protect and prolong the life of existing asphalt.

The city says micro-surfacing is a proven, effective road rehabilitation process for crack repair, rut filling or surfacing the entire roadway, and is a component of its transportation infrastructure renewal strategy.

The pilot project area will be broken down into three stages, each spanning three blocks, 20th Street NE, Seventh Avenue NE and 17th Street NE – in order – and will take approximately one day each to complete.

Weather permitting, all roads are expected to be reopened by Aug. 26.

The city says traffic accommodation plans, including detours, will be in place as construction begins, and traffic detours may change as crews shift between the project stages.

A review of the pilot program locations will be completed annually to determine if it was a success and if micro-surfacing will continue to be utilized as a maintenance option. Indicators of success include a level, uniform and well-bonded surface that lasts the average service life.

The pilot program tender includes a two-year warranty.
