The city’s parks and recreation department is asking residents to reach out if they notice sticky honeydew droplets on swings and slides while visiting a local playground.

The sticky liquid is secreted by aphids as they feed on plant sap, and a higher density of aphids will increase the amount of honeydew that drops from trees.

Honeydew can also spot windows and a finish on cars parked under infested trees. As well, sooty mold fungus can grow on honeydew deposits that accumulate on leaves and branches, turning them dark coloured and black.

The sticky liquid can easily be removed with a pressure washer. The city is asking anyone to reach out to the parks and recreation department at 403-5229-8333 (ext. 6) if you notice honeydew covered playground equipment and crew members will take care of the matter as soon as possible.
