The timeless music of Creedence Clearwater Revival will be performed by Edmonton’s Canadian Coldwater Revival on the grandstand stage this Saturday as the Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede gears up to host its free Cars and Guitars classic rock festival and car show and swap meet Saturday.
Canadian Coldwater Revival formed in 2013 after founding member Cameron McLay returned to Alberta from a successful tour throughout Germany with a separate CCR tribute band. McLay, who sings John Fogerty’s lead vocals, reached out over Kijiji, an online marketplace, to find passionate individuals with the talent to pay tribute to the well-known southern blues rock sound of CCR.
Tyler Mast on guitar, Tyler Janzen on bass, Shawn Weyer on drums and McLay with guitar and vocals make up Canadian Clearwater Revival. However, Chuck Peterson will be replacing Weyer on drums for Saturday’s performance.
“We make great music where there’s a great bond musically, rhythmically and personally,” says McLay. “It all just came together really quickly and hasn’t really changed over the years.
Canadian Clearwater Revival will be opening for rising country artist Morgan Klaiber and marks the band’s first performance south of Calgary.
“There’s a John Fogerty song that sort of sums it all up, It’s called ‘Hot Rod Heart,'” explains McLay. “It’s just about cruising, right? And that’s all we want to do. We’re cruising down to Medicine Hat, we’re going to get people’s toes tapping and people ‘s hands clapping. There’s going to be some cowbells, of course.”
McLay told the News the band is thrilled to perform CCR classics like “Have you ever seen the rain?’ and ‘Midnight Special’ for a Medicine Hat audience.
“I find the best songs have already been written by the people that have the stories to write them,” says McLay. “And we’re able to bring those to life the way they were written.
“So if you like CCR, there is not a chance you won’t enjoy the show. It’s album accurate, vocally accurate, the solos are accurate. Beginning to end is a pleasurable time.”
Canadian Clearwater Revival is coming to Medicine Hat fresh off a performance at a music festival in Sangudo, west of Edmonton, and will be performing at Edmonton’s PURE Casino Yellowhead and the Legion in Onoway in September.
