Free program offered by local public division for first-time school bus riders

Students and parents who are expecting to use a school bus for the first time this fall are invited to attend a free program to learn about bus safety and some general rules.

The Medicine Hat Public School Division and Southland Transportation are offering the ‘My First Ride Program’ for all public school students later in August.

The free drop-in program will allow students to ride a bus while getting them familiar with how to stay safe in and around a school bus and provide them with some general rules so they will be ready on the first day of school.

The program will be offered at two different locations throughout the day on Aug. 26, and no registration is required.

Dr. Roy Wilson Learning Centre will be hosting the morning program from 9-11:30 a.m in their bus lane, and Crescent Heights High School will host the afternoon program in the parking lot from noon to 2:30 p.m.

Teacher retirees

The Medicine Hat Public School board is congratulating eight educators who have retired from the education system.

Retirees include Mike Canadine, Michel Farmer, Joanne Kennedy, Ed Kruger, Sandra Mason, Susan Nelson, Sheldon Regier and Wendy Smid.

“We are immensely grateful for their dedication, passion and countless contributions over the years,” states a press release from the division. “Thank you for shaping the minds and hearts of our students.”

Division superintendent Mark Davision, who has served for eight years, has also moved on to pursue a new position as superintendent of New Westminster Schools in B.C.

Tracy Hensel has stepped into the role of acting superintendent as the division looks for Davidson’s replacement.
