More than 3,500 flapjacks and sausages were served to guests as South Country Co-op celebrated its largest Stampede pancake breakfast ever on Friday morning outside its 13th Street SE location.

The traditional Stampede breakfast was enjoyed as live musicians performed, prompting some to get up and dance, while others ate a proper cowboy and cowgirl meal to start off their day.

“Everybody seems really happy,” explained spokesperson Carmen Hudson. “All these happy kids eating their pancakes. I’m just really proud to be part of such an amazing event that everyone looks forward to.”

Dozens of volunteers from Medicine Hat Kinsmen Club, the Root Cellar and the co-operative served up warm pancakes and sausages to the large line of people.

“The groups that came together to make this happen are amazing,” Hudson said “You could never say enough good things about them. They come together to help us enrich lives and enrich communities.”

The annual breakfast is the largest community event put on each year by Co-op.

Saturday will be the last chance to enjoy a pancake breakfast during Stampede, with three available – Medicine Hat Brew Co., Strachen A&W hosted by the Lions Club and the Ratepayers’ Association’s event at the Thai Orchid Room.
