Wine gets better with age, but pancake breakfasts?

Kiwanis president Perry Bergum thinks so.

“Best crowd, best weather; I think it’s the best we’ve put on,” said Bergum between turns on the grill dispensing pancake batter and serving more than 1,000 Hatters and visitors to the Medicine Hat Lodge who took in the annual event on Wednesday.

For decades the club has put on the breakfast in conjunction with the hotel to help start off right during the opening day of the exhibition grounds.

Local celebrities taking a turn on kitchen patrol included Kiwanians, Mayor Linnsie Clark and reigning Stampede Queen and Princess Emma Atkinson and Caitlyn O’Connor.

Breakfasts take a break today as Hatters flock to the city centre to take in the parade that will feature Premier Danielle Smith as honorary marshal.

She spent Wednesday in the Taber area, meeting with local councils and touring the Horsefly Spillway site that acts as a flood prevention outlet in the area.

The year’s parade route is mainly confined to First Street and a portion of Second Street in the downtown, which is hemmed in by substantial road work on Third Street.

Upcoming grub

South Country Co-op will host its annual pancake breakfast on Friday morning at the 13th Avenue food store.

Medicine Hat Brewing Company will host hungry Hatters for an event on Saturday morning, as will the Utility Ratepayer’s Association will stage a breakfast at the Thai Orchid Room near Strachen Road.

The Community View Lion’s Club has also announced that it is partnering with A&W restaurants at the Strachen Road location to provide pancake breakfast from 7-10 a.m. Saturday.
