The City of Medicine Hat will be taking care to preserve the health of the urban forest, removing a number of trees that have reached the end of their life cycle.

Crews began removing dead trees in Leinweber Park on Tuesday. Several of the trees removed are being taken due to their condition brought on by the stress caused by the multi-year drought conditions.

This work will continue in the park until all the dead trees have been removed, a project anticipated to be completed in 2024. Some of the disc golf holes in the area may be affected by the work, but all other amenities in the area will be available as usual.

Residents are asked to obey all signage and stay clear of the work zone as crews move around Leinweber Park.

Trees will also be removed in various locations, including Gershaw Interchange at Highways 1 and 3.

Tree replacement work will begin once all dead trees have been removed, says the city. This process will introduce resilient and bio-diverse species into green spaces around Medicine Hat. Species selection will vary based on location.

“The city’s tree canopy is a valuable asset which will be conserved and expanded through departmental and municipal policies and plans,” said the City of Medicine Hat. “The city is committed to maintaining the existing urban forests and is committed to taking steps to expand canopy cover in all viable public spaces. This includes the implementation of post-planting care to ensure survival.”
