The Family, Fun and Flight Airshow is slated to take to the skies right before stampede week, and invites residents to get to know their airport community.
Made possible by a significant grant from the City of Medicine Hat Community Vibrancy Program, as well as community business partners, the event will feature both displays and aerial performers.
The show got its beginnings in 2009, when the Vintage Wings of Canada reintroduced Hawk One to Canada- a fully restored F-86 Sabre jet in authentic livery. Dave Rozdeba and Kevin Green, local aviation enthusiasts, worked together that year to make Medicine Hat one of the stops on the Sabre’s summer tour.
The event has grown significantly since then, with the Family Fun and Flight group carrying on with their dream.
Gates will open to the public at Noon at the Medicine Hat Airport, with static displays from several local and itinerant aircraft, participation of aviation related clubs like the Medicine Hat RCers and the Medicine Hat Chapter of the Canadian Aviation Historical Society, sight-seeing flights offered by Super T Aviation, Medicine Hat Police and Fire Services assets and food trucks.
This is also an opportunity for our community to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Air Force, said the group.
The Northern Stars Aeroteam, the Yellow Thunder Formation Aerobatic team, and the HALO Air Ambulance helicopter will all be doing flying displays, starting at 6p.m.
Gate admission is free, with donations gratefully accepted. No pets and no smoking will be allowed on the property. The group reminds residents to be mindful of the heat; they advise bringing water, and warn that airfield tarmac can get significantly hotter than normal cement or pavement.
