Two Medicine Hat men have been charged with several offences relating to mail theft and fraud after police responded to a report of shoplifting from a local business Tuesday.

Forty-one-year-old Kelly Fisher and 29-year-old Rainey Barker were apprehended near the scene in one of the suspect’s vehicles and after further investigation by police located a large amount of stolen mail as well as break in tools.

Fisher has been charged with possession of a Canada Post key, break-in tools, stolen credit card data and six counts of possession of identity information, two counts of possession of identity document and three counts of stolen property under $5,000.

Fisher was held for a Judicial Interim Release hearing and was released pending his next court appearance scheduled for July 3.

Barker has been charged with possession of a Canada Post key, break-in tools, stolen credit card data, shoplifting under $5,000 and two counts of failing to comply with release order, six counts of possession of identity document and three counts of possession of stolen property under $5,000.

Barker will remain in custody until his next Provincial Court appearance on June 13.

Police say the investigation is ongoing and investigators are working closely with Canada Post inspectors to return recovered mail and packages to their intended recipients once they are no longer required for investigational purposes.

In March the News reported police had strong leads on suspects stealing mail from community mail boxes in the communities of South Ridge and Ross Glen.

In April police arrested and charged 41-year-old Cassandra Chenoweth with several mail theft-related offences.
