Since 1946, 80 years ago, the Kiwanis Club of Medicine Hat has been recognizing homeowners and residential blocks who take pride in their properties and care for their gardens in its Best Block.Best Residence program.

The program promotes neighbourhood appeals and recognizes homeowners who take pride in keeping their properties neat and tidy.

The yearly project includes almost all members of the club as they will set out in pairs to judge 12 zones in the city throughout the summer.

In each of the 12 zones judges will be looking for the Best Residence and Best Block (group of five or more houses with well kept yards) who will be awarded a plaque at a presentation ceremony later in the summer.

Residences will be judged on factors including variety of plants, creative landscaping, unusual features, good use of grass, shrubs, trees, flowers and overall street appeal. Homeowners who have used xeriscaping to reduce the amount of watering required for their yard maintenance will boost the judges’ impressions.

After 12 weeks a final team of judges will revisit all the residences selected and choose the best individual residence and the best block overall.

Winners each week will appear Saturdays throughout the summer on the News’ Home & Garden page.
