An 80-year-old cyclist has begun an eight-week tour of Alberta that will conclude in Medicine Hat next month.

Art Brochu plans to pedal 2,000 kilometres and check in at 17 checkpoints – raising money for local facilities along the way – and to promote the Alberta Cancer Foundation.

Brochu left Fort McMurray on Monday, headed for Grande Prairie before criss-crossing back and forth to Lloydminster, Edmonton, Drayton Valley, Camrose, Red Deer, Canmore, Drumheller, Calgary and Lethbridge among other locations.

A wrap-up event is planned at the Margery E. Yuill Cancer Centre in Medicine Hat on July 29.

A participant in the Enbridge Tour Alberta Against Cancer annual fundraiser, Brochu says that many members of his family have had cancer, and all Albertans can contribute to research and treatment advances.

“It’s my wish that we can all come together and help to do whatever it takes to find the cures and treatments so that all cancers can be eliminated,” said Brochu in a statement.

“What Art is doing to shine a spotlight on cancer and support those affected by the disease is truly phenomenal,” said Wendy Beauchesne, the CEO of the Alberta Cancer Foundation.
