Spectrum weekend in Medicine provided warm weather for good crowds in Kin Coulee park. Light rain Saturday and a chance of showers on Sunday and Monday should give way to sunshine this week and a potential for 30C temperatures next weekend.

At council tonight

Council meets at 6:30 p.m. tonight (YouTube broadcast here and Rogers Community Cable) to discuss the long awaited environmental roadmap and potentially part of the city’s Clear Horizon carbon capture project.
Money and grants were allocated in 2022 for early work, administrators now say additional phases of the project will require funding decision.

Also on the agenda:

— The new owner of the Aurora Sun Greenhouse is seeking tax reduction for 2024 — a year ahead of changes that would come be applied in 2025. Read previous coverage of the story here.
— The city will debate making a request for increased policing dollars from the province to update a six-year-old funding model.

Highway construction begins

A groundbreaking took place Friday in tabor for the twinning of Highway 2 between that town and Burdett.

Two Tigers win CHL awards

Medicine Hat Tigers forwards Cayden Lindstrom and Gavin McKenna were recognized by the Canadian Hockey League at the 2024 Memorial Cup.

Lindstrom was named the CHL’s top prospect ahead of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft at the end of June. The 18-year-old forward missed the second half of the Tigers’ season, returning for four playoff games due to injury. Lindstrom, as well as Andrew Basha, were both invited to the NHL’s draft combine starting today in Buffalo.

Gavin McKenna also won a CHL award, being named the CHL’s top rookie. McKenna had 34 goals and 97 points in 61 games in his WHL rookie season.

The Tigers also hosted their annual prospects camp over the weekend at the Hockey Hounds Arena.

Mavs fall Sunday

After a 4-0 shutout win Friday over the Swift Current 57’s at Athletic Park, the Medicine Hat Mavericks fourth straight win, they lost 16-4 Sunday to the Fort McMurray Giants.

The Mavs (4-2) are back in action tonight at AP against the same Giants. They have an off day Tuesday before five straight games sees them at Lethbridge against the Bulls on Wednesday, back at home Thursday against Swift Current, on the road Friday against the Brooks Bombers before opening a two-game set against the Weyburn Beavers on Saturday and Sunday.
