The Medicine Hat SPCA will celebrate 30 years in its current location as part of the Spring Open House and fundraiser next Saturday.

The shelter itself will be open for tours from noon to 4 p.m., said Morgan Widmer, fund development and communications manager for the Medicine Hat SPCA.

“It’s a day to see some animals, we’ll also have some activities,” said Widmer. “There’ll be kids activities, like colouring sheets and a beanbag toss, we’ll have a giveaway, we’ll also have a pet garage sale. So we’ll sell some items for cheap outside the building.”

The goal is simply to invite people down to celebrate and allow staff to shed light on some of the SPCA’s lesser-known services, such as its low-cost spay and neuter program.

The event will also feature a fundraiser barbecue, where attendees can get chips, a soft drink and either a hamburger or hot dog for $5.

“We’ll have a bottle trailer on site, as well,” said Widmer. “So we’re asking people, if they have any bottles as well, we’ll be collecting them as well.”

She explained that all funds raised will go toward veterinary costs for the animals in the shelter’s care. The SPCA is pleased to be getting back into being able to host the Spring Open House after the COVID-19 pandemic, and hopes to see the public to help with the 30-year anniversary in the space.

“We’re excited and looking forward to just being able to connect with the public, and we’re really blessed to have such a supportive community,” said Widmer. “It’s just a nice way to just kind of come celebrate and hang out, and really, who doesn’t love animals?”
