City officials are stressing the “temporary” nature of a new advertisement to hire a city clerk in Medicine Hat.
The posting was uploaded Wednesday to the “career opportunities” listings on the city’s webpage, but several weeks since city clerk Larry Randle took part in a council meeting.
The job is noted as “temporary full-time” with “the potential for permanent employment” for the right candidate who holds a university degree in public administration and has 10 years of experience in municipal government.
City officials responded to News questions that the standing policy is to not comment on human relations matters.
Randle became the third city clerk in two years last August when he was hired to fill the role permanently.
Angela Cruickshank left the position after 10 years in 2022 in order to work for a foreign national government. Her replacement, Arlene Karbeshewski, left after one year take a position with the City of Edmonton. Another “interim clerk” in the position was hired by the City of Red Deer.
Two current legislative staff members have attended council meetings in May to perform clerk duties.
The city has argued that it is currently seeing a marked increase in workload related to freedom of information requests from the public – which are dealt with by the clerk’s office.
