May 31 marks World No Tobacco Day, an annual initiative lead by the World Health Organization to raise awareness about the health risks associated with use.

AHS put out a public service announcement in relation to the date, seeking to highlight the addictive properties of nicotine and the harm caused by commercial tobacco, especially in youth and teenagers.

They remind residents that young people who use nicotine may find it difficult to learn, concentrate, or remember things, both in the short and long term.

Nicotine use can also increase symptoms of anxiety, depression, or stress, said AHS. It increases risk of chronic lung disease and damage, and youth may even experience burns or injuries due to exploding vaping devices.

“Nicotine poisoning is a risk for children and youth. They might ingest vaping solutions or cigarette butts by accident, or misuse products that contain nicotine,” said AHS. They encourage parents and caregivers who are concerned about potential nicotine poisoning to call 1-800-332-1414 to reach the Poison & Drug Information Service (PADIS).

AHS also encourages guardians to learn more about the use of vaping devices online via behindthehaze.ca, especially if they are concerned about their teen’s use of commercial products, or search for local youth coalitions who may be able to provide information, support and often focus on peer education and advocacy projects to raise awareness around tobacco and other nicotine-containing products.

Talking to a health-care provider for support and recommendations is also advised by AHS.
