This week a local documentary highlighting the historical significance of the 112 year-old Monarch Theatre will play its final screenings in the old theatre.
Local filmmaker Luke Fandrich, also known as Editing Luke, wanted to bring his film “Your Cinema Needs You” back to the Monarch one last time to support the theatre as it undergoes major restorations.
“The big push right now is to help the Monarch with their restoration efforts,” says Fandrich. “And seeing the movie is a big way in helping to do that. Because once the restoration efforts are complete, we get that much closer to the Monarch returning to regular screenings.”
Five screenings will run Thursday to Sunday with three evening shows starting at 7 p.m. and two matinees starting at 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Fandrich says he wanted to give residents one last chance to check out the film in the theatre it’s based on following the international attention “Your Cinema Needs You” has received at film festivals around the world, including Hong Kong, Sweden, Germany, Scotland and Japan.
“It makes sense to bring it back to Medicine Hat for this final run of shows, and anyone who missed it during the premiere screenings, now’s your time to come see it in the Monarch,” says Fandrich.
The film is expected to show at film festivals in New York, Seattle and Toronto before Fandrich will release the documentary over TELUS at a later date.
Fandrich says they have plenty of seats open for all five showings and tickets can be purchased at the door for $15 cash-only and online at editingluke.com.
