A free, family-friendly outdoor event with children’s activities, local vendors, food trucks, live fitness demonstrations and activities to celebrate Park and Recreation Month is planned for June 8.

‘Energy in Motion’ will take place throughout Towne Square and Riverside Veterans Park and will highlight local businesses and organizations dedicated to fitness, recreation and the outdoors.

City officials say the event encourages an active summer and the use of local outdoor facilities, trails and parks.

“We welcome the community and want them to see themselves in our parks and recreation facilities,” says Scott Richter, manager of business and innovation. “We want people being active and connecting with one another and have a sense of belonging. We want people to find something they enjoy and to pursue it.”

The city is also hosting a Zumba class at Big Marble Go Centre, as well as family yoga hosted by YogaYou4ia. An obstacle bouncy course and face painting will be set up for children.

Parks and Recreation Month is recognized across Canada in June as an opportunity to improve connections with nature, increase nature conservancy and create a stronger parks system.

The city is encouraging local businesses and organizations interested in participating in the event to fill out a vendor registration form found on the city’s website.

Additional free downtown parking will be available throughout the summer on the third level of the Transit Terminal Parkade.

The free event runs June 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
