The weather may have turned, but five Medicine Hat firefighters climbed up onto the roof of station 2 on Friday to raise funds for Muscular Dystrophy Canada.
They have been doing fundraisers for Muscular Dystrophy Canada since 1971. What began with the “Fill the Boot” campaign has upgraded to a weekend-long camping experience for the firefighters.
Firefighter BJ Lang has been a part of the event in every role, from watching fundraisers as a young boy, to helping organize, to finally being one of the people who is climbing the ladder to spend the next few days in a rooftop tent.
“We’ll probably talk about hockey. We got some Oilers and Leafs fans, so we will probably bicker and talk about hockey and maybe watch a few games. Just just like being on fire off and making fun of each other for the whole, probably two days,” said Lang.
Over the weekend, there will be volunteers on the ground around the station to collect donations, as well as a boot on a rope for those inclined to give cash directly to the campers. Lang noted that they do have the ability to take donations online, or via tap at the station.
The fundraiser will run through Sunday.
