@MedicineHatNews The union representing civilian support staff at CFB Suffield held an information picket on Thursday and urged a nationwide boycott of on-base services for the day to support striking non-public funds workers at six bases in Ontario and Quebec. About 500 employees at the half-dozen bases in central Canada have been on strike for two months in hopes of getting a new contract with the additional aim of creating a nationwide pay grid for Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services workers. “We want to shine a national spotlight on the urgent need for fair wages and respect for CFMWS workers,” said June Winger, the national president of the Union of National Defence Employees and a Medicine Hat native now based in Ottawa. The Public Service Alliance of Canada has said the classification is among the lowest-paid in Canada and they supported demonstrations at gates of 19 Canadian Forces Bases, including Suffield, Cold Lake, Dundurn, Sask., Moose Jaw, Shilo and Winnipeg on the prairies. 6
