Online info session March 26 on system upgrade plans for St. Mary’s, Milk River flow

The board studying a potential updated agreement on flow for the St. Mary’s and Milk River is planning to hold a virtual information session on the work to modernize a 100-year-old system.

Beginning in 2021, the International St. Mary’s & Milk Rivers Study Board began studying options in improve access in Canada and the U.S.

On March 26, a webinar is planned to outline activities, timeline and work plan, with an emphasis on ongoing technical work.

The study is due to be presented in 2025 to the International Joint Commission governing the agreement, then forwarded to the Canadian and U.S. governments.

Since 1921, the IJC has dealt with the partnership that sees water from the St. Mary’s River diverted to the Milk River through the St. Mary’s Canal. Flow on the St. Mary’s River continues into Canada, while the Milk passes through Canada and back to Montana.
