The newest candidates for Medicine Hat’s sports wall of fame are local hockey pioneer Joe Fisher and karate sensei Zorislav Krco.

The recommendations from a selection committee were announced on Monday at regular meeting of council’s public services committee.

If approved, the two men would be added to the wall at a ceremony this spring.

Joe Fisher was the first Medicine Hat native to play in the NHL and win the Stanley Cup as a member of the 1943 Detroit Red Wings.

He was also one of three local partners to secure an expansion franchise in the Western Hockey League in 1970 along with George Maser and Rod Carry.

Fisher passed away in 2002.

Krco, who has competed and taught internationally in karate for 48 years and has been an instructor to local students since 2001.

Nominations were evaluated by council’s public Community Vibrancy Committee earlier this year. As a matter of process, council must approve the recommendation.

If accepted the pair would be the first names added to the wall, located at the Big Marble Go Centre, since 2022.
