The Alberta budget will be tabled on Thursday after the legislature resumes sitting of the winter session. Premier Danielle Smith said during a televised address last week that softer oil prices would delay a tax cut promised in the May 2023 election. A seven-month halt on new wind and solar power approvals is set to expire on Thursday, Feb. 29. The province announced in early August that it would take the Alberta Utilities Commission to study facility location, environmental impact, a potential reclamation system and the effect on power grid costs in early August.Rural municipalities backed the move while critics panned the moratorium. As well, a parallel study is looking at the effect of huge amount of proposed green energy projects on pricing and reliability. Rural radon risk Researchers are raising questions about the potential for dangerous gas to build up in homes near ground water wells. Radon forms underground and has been linked to lung cancer. Read more about the issue here. Weather wobbles Colder temperatures will begin the work week in Southern Alberta, but warmer weather is expected by Thursday. A high on just minus-14C is expected on Tuesday, but Thursday’s high could reach 11C.

A huge new conventional hall in Lethbridge that went over budget and has since been taken over by the city will host a major ag expo and seed show starting on Tuesday.Sports
The Medicine Hat Cubs are in control in their second round HJHL playoff matchup. With a 4-3 double OT win Sunday, the Cubs lead the Coaldale Copperheads 2-0 in their best-of-five series. Medicine Hat won 5-4 in OT to take Game 1 Saturday. Local product Caleb Garrecht scored both OT winners. The Cubs can sweep the series with a Game 3 Wednesday at the Kinplex. Puck drops at 8:30 p.m. The Medicine Hat Tigers managed a point in their home-and-home weekend series with the Swift Current Broncos. A 4-1 loss Friday at Swift Current and 4-3 OT loss Saturday at Co-op Place has the Tigers (33-18-5-2) leading Swift Current in the Central division race by only three points. The Tigers are off until Friday when they host the Edmonton Oil Kings in the first of a six game in nine day schedule.
