Hat-area greenhouse manager David Hoekstra will join the board of the Alberta government-funded “Results Driven Agricultural Research.”

Also joining the 10-person board is Brian Brewin, former reeve of the MD of Taber, who was nominated by the Alberta Potato Growers Association.

It was created in 2020 as an arms-length group to determine ag research priorities and disperse grants.

Hoekstra, a manager with Big Marble Farms, was nominated by the Alberta Greenhouse Growers Association.

A total of 31 industry associations related to agriculture production, like milk, pulse, grains and beef, are also represented on the 10-person board chaired by veterinarian David Chalack.

Grains board

Alberta Grains members have elected their first board since the former Alberta Barley and Alberta Wheat associations formally amalgamated last summer.

After meetings on Jan. 31, the new association announced that former Alberta Barley chair Tara Sawyer, of Acme, Alta., will chair the new group.

Spruce Grove’s Scott Jespersen and Carstairs-area farmer Devin Hartzler are vice chairs.

Region 1 directors are Dean Hubbard, of Claresholm, and past Alberta Barley chair David Bishop, of Barons, near Lethbridge.
