cgallant@medicinehatnews.com@CollinGallant Medicine Hat Community Housing received an operating fund top-up of $108,500 before Christmas to help offset the effects of inflation, the province announced Friday afternoon. In all, the Ministry of Seniors, Community and Social Services provided $10 million to 87 social housing providers in the province, according to information released at a press conference. “The challenges of inflation continue to be felt by all Albertans,” said Minster Jason Nixon. “We’ve heard housing providers loud and clear that they need more support to ensure their units can continue to be safe, stable and affordable places to live for low-income Albertans.” Local officials with Medicine Hat Community Housing, which provides and operates long-term housing units, told the News the funds will be used in operational reserves and will cover any shortfalls in regular operating expenses related to higher prices. Staff on the street Robin Miiller, head of Medicine Hat Community Housing, told the News her organization is providing assistance where it can to other groups in the city that provide short-term housing as extreme cold settles into the region. “We rely on other groups to provide that short-term (housing),” she said. “But in emergency situations we supplement if there are gaps.” This week the Community Housing emergency youth centre, operated by McMan, announced expanded operations until the end of next week. 10
