Real Christmas trees that are free of stands, decorations and plastic bags can be dropped off at the three city-run drop-off recycling depots until the end of the month.
The trees are shredded and included in the city landfill’s composting program.
Drop-off locations are at the depots located at Kipling Street, the Medicine Hat Mall and Northlands Co-op.
Community grants
Applications for microgrants to help stage community events in 2024 are now being accepted.
The City of Medicine Hat began offering up to $500 to events that support either “Neighbourhood Connections” or “Community Arts & Culture.”
In 2023, funds went toward community gardens, beading workshops, block parties, drop-in events to promote clubs, Metis Week and a line-dancing workshop.
Eligible events must be held in Medicine Hat, and either reflect council’s strategic priority to foster “community vibrancy” or build community pride.
About 1,000 Hatters took part in events staged by 77 volunteers in 2023. More information can be found on the city’s website at medicinehat.ca/grants, or by phoning the city’s community development office.
Street lights
The festive lights on major routes in the city will be removed starting Jan. 15, the municipal works department has announced.
