reporter@medicinehatnews.com Arriving in a new country to study can be a stressful and overwhelming experience and it is easy to lose track of all the tasks that need to be completed, such as applying for and receiving a Social Insurance Number. The nine-digit SIN is essential for accessing Government of Canada programs as well as for obtaining employment. Service Canada sees an increase in SIN applications during the summer and winter each year from international students and temporary foreign workers. Fortunately, it is a simple process to apply for a SIN online and Service Canada encourages all those new to the country to do so as soon as possible. Once the application is sent, the individual’s personal SIN can be viewed on their My Service Canada Account within five days and they will receive their SIN by mail within 10 business days. For those having difficulty completing the application, SIN clinics are available through post-secondary institutions or community organizations, which provide in-person support. Alternatively, one can visit the Service Canada Centre in Medicine Hat located at 78 Eighth St. NW.
