The County of Newell and the MD of Taber will each receive $50,000 in federal grants to develop road and infrastructure maintenance programs.

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities manages the Government of Canada’s municipal asset management program and announced funding for six locations in Alberta on Dec. 21.

Newell will use the funding to assess the condition of its gravel road network and determine maintenance needs over the next 10 years in order to reduce costs.

Taber will develop a condition assessment system, while the Town of Fort Macleod was also among six grant recipients.

Carbon charge in Saskatchewan

SaskPower and SaskEnergy bills to residences in January will include a federal carbon levy applied on December’s usage, but going forward will add a corresponding credit for the previous month’s amount.

A release from the Saskatchewan government on Thursday states the move – a response to Ottawa’s exemption for home-heating oil that is mostly used in Eastern Canadian – will save the average Saskatchewan household $400 in 2024, according to the Ministry of Crown Corporations.
