reporter@medicinehatnews.com Nominations are open for the inaugural Wishbone Awards by Think Turkey, which recognize unsung community heroes who help wishes come true for those in need. Think Turkey was launched in 2019 and is a partnership between Turkey Farmers of Canada, and the Canadian Poultry and Egg Processors’ Turkey Primary Processing Sector Members, a national, bilingual campaign aimed to boost turkey consumption. Food Banks Canada is reporting nearly 20% of Canadians are living with food insecurity and the cost of essentials is at a 30-year high. Food banks are stretched to their limits and the heroes who step up during the Holiday Season to donate turkeys, cook in a community kitchen or volunteer at a food bank will be recognized through this new award. Those in Medicine Hat and area are encouraged to nominate themselves or a deserving community member. Eight of the nominees will win a Wishbone Award and will receive a $2,500 grant to help fund their community efforts and have their story shared nationally. “As a chef, initiatives that help eliminate food insecurity are close to my heart,” Chuck Hughes, Canadian chef, TV personality and ambassador of the Wishbone Awards, said in a release. “I’m proud to partner with Think Turkey for the Wishbone Awards to help spotlight community heroes that truly make the holidays brighter for people in need.” Visit ThinkTurkey.ca/Wishbone from Nov. 2-15 to nominate an individual and share their story. 8
