South Eastern Alberta Archaeological Society hosting presentation tonight on children of prehistoric societies

By Medicine Hat News on October 25, 2023.

The South Eastern Alberta Archaeological Society is hosting a discussion tonight with a University of Victoria professor on the topic of children from prehistoric civilizations.

Dr. April Nowell, a Paleolithic archaeologist, is an internationally recognized scholar on the topic, authoring a recent book called Growing Up in the Ice Age. She will join via Zoom a group at the Medicine Hat College Crowfoot Room starting at 7 p.m., but anyone unable to attend in person can retrieve the link by contacting R.B. Shephard at shepardb@telus.net.

There will be a short business meeting followed by the presentation.

As hard as it might be to imagine, this entire region – minus the un-glaciated Cypress Hills – was once buried under several feet of ice. As the ice eventually receded, plants then animals and eventually people returned to the area.

Of those prehistoric societies, experts estimate that up to 65 per cent of people were children, even though most focus of scholarly attention has gone to studying their parents and grandparents. However, new research of ethnographic, fossil and archaeological material suggests the history of these children is far from unknowable.

Attending the discussion tonight is free of charge, but the society says new members are always welcome to join.
