The Dog Pound Classic volleyball tournament has been running for close to two decades at Notre Dame Academy.
“It’s a 24-team tournament,” said teacher and organizer Kennedy Were. “I think it’s one of the biggest tournaments in southern Alberta.”
About half the teams are travelling from out of town to participate. Were said they were coming from Cardston, McGrath, Lethbridge, Swift Current and Moose Jaw
The boys tournament ran this past weekend and the girls tournament runs this Friday and Saturday. Notre Dame has two boys teams and five girls teams that will participating during the tournament.
“We have lots of volleyball at Notre Dame for girls,” stated Were.
Many staff members help over the two weekends and members of the girl’s volleyball team take part as scorekeepers. Last Friday, during the final period of the day, the school held a pep rally before the tournament officially kicked off.
There are six courts between the gyms of NDA and South Ridge YMCA and 84 games will be played each weekend. There are different tiers of players and the winning teams in each tier receive banners, plaques and medals.
“It’s a fun weekend. It’s busy but one of our favourite tournaments of the year. Lots of people look forward to it,” said Were.
