Crestwood School had its first Exhibition of Learning last week, with students getting an opportunity to showcase their learning in robotics, leadership, health and wellness, digital media, music, second languages and art.
A STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fine arts gala took place in the iHUB. A variety of classes performed songs for parents and community members. An art display was held along the back of the room, and over to the side was a table where students were serving a variety of naturally flavoured waters.
The robotics students were in the iLAB. Shanae is in Grade 5 and has enjoyed the course.
“There is a bunch of other pieces than normal Lego in here, that’s why it’s so expensive,” she explained. “We had to make wheels with gears that would turn so it would move.”
She showed how her Lego robot would travel around the map of Medicine Hat without meandering off the paper.
“If you go into the coding, you can also change the speed, how many rotations it does and, yeah, I think it’s pretty interesting,” explained Shanae. “We learned about teamwork, how to get along with other people and how to advance with coding and computers.”
She also learned more about Medicine Hat and places in the city she’s never been before, which she is proud of.
“It was great, I got to spend time with my friends and time with my teacher. It was a really fun experience for my second year here.”
In digital media teacher Tyler Sandau explained some students were working on editing while others were in different locations shooting commercials. He encouraged visitors to talk with the students to discuss their process for shooting the commercial and what app they used for editing.
There were numerous QR codes on the walls for visitors to scan to watch the promotional videos each student created. Grade 6 student Grace uploaded her recorded videos to iMovie for editing and she’d created a commercial that was selling small rubber ducks to hide.
Crestwood plans to have six more of these events this school year and each will be connected to the students’ learning rotations in STEM. Dates for future events will be on the school website and calendar as well as on Edsby.
