City power customers with floating prices could see a record rate applied to bills next month.

Actual rates will be announced next week to start the month, but three of the four comparative prices that set the city’s price at average were filed this week to the Alberta Utilities Commission. They show bare rates between 25- and 29-cents per kilowatt hour.

That likely puts the regulated rate option here for August above the July rate of 25.8-cents, that includes an additional 0.9-cents to recover portions of differed rates last winter under a provincial program.

A fixed rate contract price of 16.94-cents is available but customers must lock in for 12 months to the rate that is available until the end of September. Customers also must sign on before the end of their specific billing period (noted on bills) to have the rate in place on the next bill.

The local bare rate was 31.9-cents in February, when the payback portion wasn’t yet in place, but prices to consumers were capped at 13-cents and the difference deferred. That followed an RRO rate of 29.6-cents in January.
