At long last, construction fence has been removed and the new playground at the Big Marble Go Centre is ready for testing.

Kids and attendees at day camps at the north-end rec facility gave the new structure a run through on Wednesday, a replacement for a playground removed two years ago to make way for pickleball court construction.

A statement from Mayor Linnsie Clark thanks those who took part in a design survey.

“I would also like to thank our community for their patience,” she said. “I know the playground at Big Marble Go Centre was sorely missed by many in our community, particularly young families.”

The opening was mentioned at Monday’s meeting of the public services committee within general updates, but was originally set for Saturday.

The structure was essentially complete last week, say parks officials, but work was halted to avoid congestion with the regional pickleball tournament taking place nearby.

The sod will still require some time to set up, officials say, and attendees are asked to be conscientious.

Viking ship’s fate

Administrators say they are still determining a future location for the former “viking ship” styled play structure salvaged from the Go Centre.

Some repair and replacement will be needed, said parks director James Will, but at this time it is not considered as a potential replacement for equipment removed from the Hill Pool site early this month.

That equipment was removed due to its hazardous condition, but the size of the site and the fact it is behind a fence for pool attendees only, make it ill-suited for the viking ship, said Will.
