Cypress County has issued a fire ban effective immediately, meaning those looking to set off fireworks in celebration of Canada Day will need to make a new plan or find a new location. The ban — issued Thursday morning due to lack of precipitation, hot and dry conditions and resource management – amends any previous fire control orders, cancels all fire permits and prohibits the use of fireworks until the ban has been lifted, according to a release from the county. Recreational fire pits are exempt during the fire ban. “A person who willfully sets an open fire, or any fire not allowed under this order, may be charged under the Forest and Prairie Protection Act and Cypress County Bylaw 2023/06,” reads the release. “If the person is the owner or occupant of the land on which the fire is set, these costs may be recovered by placing the costs on the tax roll and recovering them in the same manner as taxes.” Contact the Cypress County office at 403-526-2888 for more information. 6
