The bomb disposal unit of the Medicine Hat Police Service closed several businesses in the South Flats on Friday, but released the scene after several hours with a “suspicious package” in evidence.
“From preliminary observation, it definitely looked suspicious, so this was a matter of caution,” said Insp. Joe West, adding that the contents are a matter of police concern.
He said the matter is now being handled by the MHPS criminal investigations unit. More information may be available early next week.
Police arrived at about 8 a.m. at the rear of Top Hat Bingo at the intersection of Bridge Street and Clay Avenue.
Elm Street School, which sits across a large parking lot and playground. The school was put on a “shelter in place” warning, but the situation did not last into the morning recess.
The object was examined remotely using a robot vehicle fixed with a video feed. That unit also also fired two concussive rounds to break it apart.
