Community Foundation doles out $125K in its spring grants

Spring grants from the Community Foundation of Southeast Alberta total more than $125,000 to 20 organizations across the region, it was announced Monday.

The general fund and specific funds were detailed at the group’s founder’s day picnic on May 29.

Current priorities of the organization are ‘mental health’, ‘work and the economy’ and ‘vulnerable populations’, specifically food security, domestic violence and housing.

“CFSEA donors help enhance our community through their generosity and commitment to our mission,” said executive director Niki Gray.

REDI Enterprises received the largest single grant, $21,000, to develop an AISH assessment program for clientele of the Rehabilitating and Employment for Developing Independence organization.

The Connect Intercultural Association of Medicine Hat was granted $12,500 toward leadership training programs.

The Sanare Centre received $9,158 to provide group therapy for parents whose children have experienced sexual abuse.

Other grants went to Praxis Science Outreach ($10,000, Family Science Olympics), KidSport Medicine Hat ($10,000, All Kids can Play), Friends of Medalta ($4,000, kiln revitalization), Redcliff Legion ($2,100, roof repairs), Redcliff Youth Action Society ($1,310, homework program).

The Alberta Living Wage Network will receive $1,000 toward calculating the local cost of living changes for 2023.

A total of $25,500 from general and specific funds were allocated to projects in Brooks region.

They were the Bassano Elks Club ($8,000, roof repairs), Brooks Champion’s Centre ($6,000, windows), City of Brooks ($5,000, youth police academy), Brooks Dist. Child Development Society ($4,000, educational toys) and the Prairie Rose Hospice Society ($2,500, Alzheimer’s education).

From the Prairie Crocus Fund the Oyen Childcare Society and Oyen Family and Community Support Services shared in $14,500 total for mental health and “tot time” programs.

The Rural Community Fund of Forty Mile saw $9,200 allotted to the Foremost Agricultural Society ($4,000), the Bow Island Tourism and Historical Society ($3,300, building improvements) and 40 Mile Christen Education Society ($1,900, Jump Start).

The Cypress County Fund provided $5,000 total to the Dunmore Equestrian Society’s “Heritage Gather” in 2023.
