Public donations at Food Round Up event top 20,000 pounds for the Root Cellar

By Medicine Hat News on June 2, 2023.

Staff at Medicine Hat’s Root Cellar Food and Wellness Hub are grateful to Hatters for donating 20,000-plus pounds of food through the organization’s inaugural Food Round Up event, held May 27.

Carried out by volunteers from the local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, McCoy Colts football team and Ironhorse Energy Services, the non-perishable food collection event helped build up the Root Cellar’s Emergency Food Pantry, which has been expended in recent months due to an increase of food insecurity within the community.

“The day was an overwhelming success,” said executive director Melissa Mullis. “Thanks to the kindness of our community, the shelves of our Emergency Food Pantry are full.”
