Medicine Hat’s first in-person Terry Fox Run since 2019 is set to take place Sept. 17 at 10:30 a.m. on the Medicine Hat College’s Sunrise Rotary Trail.
The family-friendly run/walk is one of many held across Canada and the world in memory of Canadian athlete and activist Terry Fox, who, in 1980, embarked on a journey across-Canada to raise funds for cancer research.
“The Terry Fox Run is an incredible event for an important cause (and) we are thrilled to be hosting it again in Medicine Hat,” Keith Walker, co-president of the Medicine Hat Sunrise Rotary Club, the event’s sponsor, told the News.
“During the pandemic, people could do it virtually, but last year was the first year it actually wasn’t running in Medicine Hat (virtually or in-person) … So, we’re hoping we can get a good number of people out for it this year.”
Walker hopes to welcome at least 100 participants at the event, and would like to see a total of $9,000 raised.
“Terry Fox was a Canadian hero,” said Walker. “We are proud to be part of his legacy, and we hope that Hatters will help us raise both awareness and funds for this important cause.”
Hatters who wish to take part in the local event are invited to register and begin fundraising at any point in the following months by visiting run.terryfox.ca/28556.
Individuals are also welcome to register on event day.
Walker encourages event participants as well as supporters to also purchase a #DearTerry T-shirt from terryfox.org, with proceeds from all sales also going to cancer research.
