Ongoing work to create an “Environmental Framework” for the city will be discussed with the public during an open house Tuesday night at the Kinplex Social Room at the arena located on the Medicine Hat Stampede grounds.

Initial planning for the project began last October with a review of current practices, and focus sessions with key stakeholders were held over the winter.

Public feedback on a draft framework will be gathered at this week’s meeting as well as online until a final proposal is sent to council for approval by year end.

The study, conducted by third-party consultant WSP, is being paid for with an $80,000 grant from the Alberta government-funded Municipal Climate Change Action Centre.

A final report will suggest a 25-year action plan with several shorter phases to reduce emissions and also guide city infrastructure planning to withstand less predictable, more extreme weather.

When approved in early 2023, council was told major topic sections would be water management, air quality and emissions, the local ecosystem, solid waste, urban design, land use and the potential of “green” economic growth.
