Milk River ED has been closed, partially closed for a third of 2023

By Medicine Hat News on May 24, 2023.

Milk River Health Centre’s emergency department closed unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon due to a shortage of physician coverage.

Alberta Health Services announced the temporary closure at roughly 4 p.m. Tuesday. Reopening is scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday.

Physician shortages resulting in temporary closures of the centre’s ED has been an ongoing challenge affecting the community of Milk River throughout recent years.

Of the 144 days which have passed since the start of 2023, the centre’s ED was closed – either entirely or for a portion of its regular 24-hours operation – 47 days.

During closures, Milk River and area residents in need of urgent medical care are recommended to call 911 for EMS assistance, or seek care at the Raymond Health Centre (60 km away) or Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge (87 km away).

AHS previously confirmed it is working to remedy the physician shortage, but thanks area residents for their patience in the meantime.
