Hatters are turning their eyes to the skies – or more specifically, the stars – during the Medicine Hat Astronomy Club’s annual Public Star Party and Spring Open House.
Taking place at 8 p.m. May 27 at the Sunridge Observatory, the free event offers amateur astronomers and hobbyists an opportunity to view the night sky through an array of telescopes, including a 16-inch, computer-controlled Meade Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope, one of the largest telescopes in Alberta.
Attendees are invited to snap an Instagram-worthy pic of the moon and stars through the telescopes with their phone cameras, as well as meet with club members and discuss astronomy or learn more about the club itself, including membership opportunities.
The Public Star Party and Spring Open House is one of two public events the club runs each year, the other being its October Membership Drive.
The club also hosts several paid events yearly, the most well-known being its Southern Alberta Star Party held each September at Elkwater, for which registration is now open on sasp.ca.
For more information on the club and upcoming events, check out the Medicine Hat Astronomy Club Facebook page or visit the Sunridge Observatory, located 17 kilometres west of Medicine Hat off Highway 3 on Range Road 72, during the May 27 event.
